Global data center services provider CyrusOne today announced that the first phase of a 160,000-square-foot expansion at its Houston West campus is fully operational with 40,000 square feet of space commissioned.
The addition of 160,000 square feet with critical power capacity of 18 megawatts brings the Houston West data center total to 300,000 square feet, making it the largest data center campus for seismic exploration computing in the oil and gas industry with 32 megawatts of power capacity. Earlier this year CyrusOne purchased an adjacent 33-acre parcel of land, which increases the size of its Houston West campus to more than 45 acres. It will have approximately 60 to 70 megawatts of power capacity once all phases of expansion are fully commissioned.
“The increasing volume of data in the oil and gas industry has led leaders of these businesses to look to IT solutions providers to help optimize the data capture, analysis, and decision-making process,” said Kevin Timmons, chief technology officer at CyrusOne. “CyrusOne’s Houston West campus is optimized for high-value processing of seismic exploration data with best-in-class data center power systems and redundant cooling architectures. What we’ve built is a high-performance geophysical computing campus with the capability to handle and transfer intensive oil and gas exploration and production data between equipment at a single location and also across multiple geographic locations for analysis.
Delivering Best-in-Class Facilities and Networks for Oil and Gas Customers
The continued expansion of CyrusOne’s Houston West data center is part of the company’s global data center strategy, which ultimately includes doing business with nearly all super-major and major oil and gas firms in the world. CyrusOne has unique data center engineering capabilities to handle the highest-density computing environments in the industry. Its high-performance Texas data centers give customers the flexibility to leverage the most advanced server technology, accommodating 250 watts per square foot and higher, which in turn has enabled CyrusOne to become the leading technology provider for seismic exploration research and development.
CyrusOne’s Houston West campus also houses the first-ever enterprise high-performance computing (HPC) cloud solution for the oil and gas industry to enable companies to align performance computing directly to project period and refresh cycles. Oil and gas customers managing seismic processing demands are able to optimize budgets, time commitments, and technology by using the HPC cloud solution.
Earlier this year CyrusOne launched the first seismic interconnection platform for oil and gas companies. The CyrusOne Seismic Internet Exchange provides cost-effective means for customers to share the tremendous amounts of data associated with seismic exploration efforts.
Massively Modular® Facility Design Benefits Customers
CyrusOne broke ground on this most recent Houston West expansion in September 2012 and used its Massively Modular® facility design approach to complete the first phase in just seven months. The Massively Modular method of designing and building a data center delivers industry-leading energy optimization, with the new Houston West facility expected to meet Platinum LEED certification standards. In addition to optimizing energy, CyrusOne’s Massively Modular approach delivers scalable, just-in-time inventory to meet customer demand, all of which optimizes customer budgets without sacrificing facility quality and data management capabilities.
