Owens Corning has been a leader in advancing the residential insulation industry with new technological innovations since it commercialized the category nearly 75 years ago. Its latest development, the energy-efficient EnergyComplete® Sealant, continues this tradition by winning Design Journal's 2013 ADEX Platinum Award for Design Excellence. The high-performance sealant is designed to help combat home energy loss.
"This ADEX Platinum Award for EnergyComplete® Sealant reinforces the high praise from consumers, contractors and builders alike that the system has received since its debut," said Julian Francis, vice president and general manager of Residential Insulation at Owens Corning Insulating Systems, LLC. "It is always rewarding to have our products recognized, particularly by our industry's top influencers and experts, as we strive to elevate the building materials industry with our design and manufacturing innovation."
In a groundbreaking study1, the Owens Corning Building Science team identified specific exterior joints where air is most likely to enter and escape from a home through vulnerable gaps, cracks and seams – accounting for up to 40 percent2 of the energy used for heating and cooling. This insight inspired the design of the exclusive formula and equipment used in EnergyComplete® sealant.
The Owens Corning™ EnergyComplete® Sealant is part of a whole-home insulation and air sealing solution designed to help increase a home's comfort and energy-efficiency. EnergyComplete® Sealant's design allows the expanding gasket to easily fill gaps and cracks that can't be accessed post drywall and also allows easy access to all top plates pre-drywall. The sealant also reduces the chance of mold growth by keeping airborne moisture from entering wall cavities, and creates a first line of defense against insects and other pests. A specially designed nozzle works with the sealant to help reduce product usage and allows contractors to seal critical, hard-to-reach joints – making it great for contractors to reduce build-cycle time.
The system contributes to points of green building programs such as ENERGY STAR®, LEED®, and the NAHB National Green Building Standard, and is GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified®. It's also the only air sealing solution that creates a gasket between lumber and drywall, helping builders meet new code requirements, including the new 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), already in place in Illinois, Massachusetts and Maryland – with several other states expected to adopt it in the near future.
"Whether to satisfy homebuyer demand or achieve code requirements, builders today are under increasing pressure to meet stringent energy efficiency tolerances without sacrificing margins or reputation," said Francis. "Owens Corning™ EnergyComplete® Sealant features a gasketing solution that uses building science innovation to help builders achieve these objectives."
