The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced that the Wakefield Recreation Centre has been granted financial assistance to upgrade and expand the Wakefield outdoor skating rink in the municipality of La Pêche.
"By supporting Wakefield Recreation Centre's renovation project, our Government is delivering on its commitment to improve the quality of life in our communities," said Minister Lebel.
The project will provide the community with a safe, multipurpose outdoor recreational facility. Upgrading the ice rink involves installing a concrete surface and permanent boards.The expansion will also comprise a concrete surface, juxtaposed to the ice rink and with obstacles for skateboarding. The surfaces will also be used for basketball, inline skating, ball hockey and other activities, thus offering the growing population of Wakefield a variety of possibilities.
"Our Government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded Minister Lebel.

This financial assistance, granted in the form of a $150,650 non-repayable contribution, has been awarded through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
The CIIF has a nationwide budget of $150 million over two years, including $31.2 million to be invested in Quebec where the Agency is responsible for its administration. The Fund aims to support the rehabilitation and improvement, including expansion, of existing community infrastructure. The 2nd call for proposals is currently open; interested organizations may submit their proposals until April 30, 2013.
