Affan Innovative Structures LLC has developed a flexible, lightweight composite solution for its innovative architectural structures by combining carbon fibre with epoxy infusion systems from The Dow Chemical Company. Prestigious projects such as the notable Sidra Hospital in Qatar (see pictures) and the ultra-modern Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi benefit from this exciting innovation.
Dow will showcase Affan curved structures using VORAFORCETM epoxy systems at Stand P 14 during JEC Europe 2013 Composites Exhibition in Paris, March 12-14.
VORAFORCETM TF epoxy systems from Dow have been developed specifically for the infusion process. Offering very low viscosity and low exothermicity, the systems allow for optimal fibre wetting and efficient processing. Due to its superior final properties, including exceptional lightweight and stiffness, the composite can enable free form shapes and dynamic curvature as typical for Affan’s structures.
Dr. Amer Affan, founder and managing partner of Affan, is delighted that the joint work with Dow has led to the development of the quality products that are essential components of Affan’s composite elements and have provided the technology for Affan to deliver revolutionary designs and structures on a large scale.
“At Affan, I believe that composite technology will be the new frontier of architectural design and engineering. It will offer architects the opportunity to realize structures and design projects that previously wouldn’t have been possible with traditional methods. As a structural engineer but also as a designer I am constantly looking for unique solutions, and with carbon composites and Dow’s systems I believe I have the innovation that will be the key for tomorrow’s architectural challenges.”
