For major-metro regions in Ohio, including Akron, OH; Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN; Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, OH; Columbus, OH; Dayton, OH; Toledo, OH; Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA, the BidClerk Construction Index™ (BCI) reported that there was an overall decline in construction projects that were actively bidding. A year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter analysis revealed that both private and public construction projects experienced declines.
Overall, construction activity that was actively bidding experienced a decrease of (-12.4%) compared to one year ago. Private construction activity dropped (-5.8%), while public construction dropped (-14.6%). In a quarter-over-quarter analysis for all construction projects that were actively bidding, the major-metro regions in Ohio experienced a decrease of (-17.7%). Third quarter private projects experienced a decrease of (-6.1%) and public projects decreased (-21.4%) compared to the second quarter of 2012.
In a year-over-year analysis, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding in the Cleveland region dropped (-5.0%) compared to one year ago, with private projects decreasing (-13.6%), but public projects showing no change. A BCI quarter-over-quarter analysis also revealed contraction of the construction sector in the Cleveland region. Combined private and public construction projects that were actively bidding in the Cleveland region experienced a decrease of (-24.3%), with private and public construction projects decreasing (-3.4%) and (-31.7%), respectively.
In a year-over-year analysis for the Cincinnati region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding decreased (-17.8%) compared to one year ago, with private projects increasing 15.1%, but public projects decreasing (-24.8%). A quarter-over-quarter analysis revealed that combined private and public construction projects that were actively bidding in the Cincinnati region experienced a decline of (-13.5%), with private and public construction projects dropping (-11.6%) and (-14.2%), respectively.
In a year-over-year analysis for the Columbus region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding dropped (-3.2%) compared to one year ago, with private projects increasing 6.9%, but public projects decreasing (-7.5%). A quarter-over-quarter analysis revealed that combined private and public construction projects that were actively bidding in the Columbus region experienced a decrease of (-14.3%), with private construction projects increasing 4.0%, but public construction projects dropping (-21.1%).
Nationally, BCI found that combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 3.0% in the third quarter of 2012, compared to the same quarter a year ago. BCI also found that third quarter 2012 public construction increased modestly, rising just 0.2%, while third quarter 2012 private construction jumped 12.3%, year-over-year.
