Contaminated land professionals have had to face a number of new challenges in the past 12 months. The implementation of Landfill Directive last summer and the forthcoming Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) has made off-site disposal more difficult and expensive in many parts of the UK. However, the application of alternative process-based technologies is still limited through a number of practical and regulatory barriers.
This conference will explain how WAC and Hazardous Waste regulations will affect the management of contaminated land. There will be a forum to discuss the recent Government and regulatory policy in contaminated land, problems with the limited number of landfill sites available, ways that contaminated waste is treated including durability of landfill liners, human health and ground water risk assessment, how to deal with special sites such as Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and the potential conflict between Brownfield redevelopment and sustainability issues in areas such as the Thames Gateway.
