Balfour Beatty Construction together with the Sweetwater Union High School District commemorated the groundbreaking of extensions to Montgomery Middle School on August 14. Balfour Beatty is building a unit of 37,500 sq. ft. of $20.7 million which will have five new buildings.
Two of the structures will be two-story classroom buildings comprising a total of 18 classrooms, a cafeteria, a counseling room, a library and covered lunch space. The venture will also involve taking down the existing library, cafeteria, and some classrooms.
LPA Architects are the architects of the venture who have included in it various power-saving attributes through which they aim to earn a LEED Platinum. These will help in saving power in the buildings by more than 40% of what is stipulated by the state. Some of the attributes are as follows: (i) thermal displacement ventilation arrangement that will let in treated air through the floor rather than the ceiling, which will save a lot of power; (ii) low-flow fittings in washrooms that will enable water saving; (iii) biosales in the external environs that will treat storm water run-off prior to its discharge offsite; (iv) use of regional plants in the surroundings that need minimal water for survival; and (v) exteriors and roof that are of a light shade in order to reflect heat and sunlight and avoid the heat island effect, thus keeping the interior reasonably cool.
The venture is slated for completion by 2013 summer and can accommodate students by the 2013ƒ{2014 academic year. The school is at 1051 Picador Boulevard, San Diego. Funding of over $19 million is from Prop O funds and the remainder will be from the State School Facility Program.
