Kier Living has announced that it commenced renovation work at the Almshouses, which is located in Culverland Road in Exeter, and in order to celebrate, Cllr Rob Newby, The Lord Mayor of Exeter, with Exeter Municipal Charities’ trustees and Kier participated in a function to mark the formal beginning of demolition works.
Kate Caldwell, Chairman at Exeter Municipal Charities stated that he is delighted about the initial step taken in constructing these new homes for residents in Exeter and joining of the Lord Mayor of Exeter for the celebration. Similar to its other properties, the company will give priority to house aged people in need and those having strong local relation to the region.
Russ Palmer, local architect, specifically designed the development, which will replace the 12 flats with 24 two-bedroom units. Present standards for Decent Homes are not meet by the current almshouses. These almshouses experience problems and poor access with thermal insulation and sound.
The company will build every new unit with two lifts over three floors and these units will have more space when compared to the present properties. In addition, there are plans of having a beautiful garden with flowers and shrubs to attract butterflies and birds.
Kier Living’s John Titcombe commented that the company is expecting to construct this new sustainable building in the center of Exeter, and to closely work with Exeter Municipal Charities in order to offer homes, which have been specifically designed to utilize established energy efficiency features like air source heat pumps.
He added that the new homes, built to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4, have high insulation level that may result in lower energy bills, when compared to other homes constructed based on present standards.
