US-based Regency Centers, specialising in the operation and development of community and grocery based shopping centres has announced that two of its buildings in North Carolina and Illinois have received LEED Silver certification from the USGBC.
The North Carolina building is the Market at Colonnade which is an infill centre covering an area of 57,637 sq.ft and operated by Whole Foods Market and the Illinois building is Mariano’s Fresh Market covering an area of 51,298 sq.ft at Roscoe Square.
Green features of the North Carolina building include the implementation of Low Impact Design and re-usage of up to 300,000 gallons of storm water runoff for plumbing and irrigation purposes. The company partnered with North Carolina State University for designing this system and for continuous monitoring of the system to test its efficiency. The building also features two electric car charging stations for customers. The development has already been recognised for its energy efficiency through awards such as the 2011 Greater Triangle Stewardship Development Award, the Triangle Commercial Real Estate Women’s 2012 Best Land Use Award and the 2011 City of Raleigh Environmental Award for Natural Resource Conservation.
The Illinois building features high building insulation, energy efficient lighting, green roof and underground detention cistern for efficient management of storm water runoff and the recycling of 96% of debris arising from demolition. The new materials used for the building were sourced regionally and chosen for their recyclable content. 70% of the building’s electricity usage for the next two years has been offset by renewable energy certificates. Regency Centers presently has 17 projects that have been registered for LEED and five that have received final certification.
