Demonstration Test House from Honda Features Smart Home System

Honda Motor launched a house constructed by the company to test the Honda Smart Home System (HSHS). The house was constructed in Saitama city, Japan. In-house energy demand and supply is comprehensively monitored and both energy generation and consumption is efficiently managed while mobility products are being used. With HSHS, users can preserve their own supply of mobility and energy when there is any disaster.

The HSHS comprises a home battery unit or a rechargeable battery, hot water supply system, household gas-engine cogeneration unit and the Smart e-Mix Manager. The Smart e Mix Manager is an all-inclusive energy management device that optimally controls the electricity delivered from the commercial grid and generated by each of the energy devices composing the system. The Smart e Mix Manager ensures that there is always a backup electricity supply that one can fall back on in times of a disaster or power outage as well as considerably brings reduction in CO2 emissions.

On May 23, 2011, Honda entered into a contract to take part in the Saitama city-run E-KIZUNA project. The company constructed two houses as part of the project, each for single-family use near Saitama University. It is scheduled that a third house will be constructed in the same area enabling linking of the three houses for smart community demonstration testing.

The gas-engine cogeneration system considerably reduces CO2 emissions by enabling effective heat generation and consumption. The testing will involve validating the effectiveness of an innovative CIGS thin film solar cell module that is being designed presently. A home battery unit will be designed, the functionality of which will also be tested. Optimal energy management offered by the Smart e Mix Manager will also be verified. The company will test whether household energy is being optimally used and can be used to charge plug-in hybrid vehicles and EVs. The company is also striving to reduce the load on public infrastructures such as fuel cell electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles in order to supply electricity for home use. A number of key information services that will be provided will also be tested. These include notifying arrival of visitors, remote control of different appliances, electricity information, heat information, bill information and many more such services.
