Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital have been awarded LEED Silver certification from the US Green Building Council. The certification was awarded to the hospital for being innovative and environmentally responsible.
Specific features that led to the certification include the installation of a new green roof, which is now used to filter rainfall. This green roof is part of the hospital’s natural storm-water management system. The green roof has been planted with sedum, which is resistant to drought. The green roof helps reduce the reduction of energy and heat radiation, improves overall quality of air and cuts down on heat generated.
The green roof that has been installed now is expected to last for a longer time than regular roofs. All the flooring in the hospital has been done based on rubber, hence eliminating the need for stripping, waxing or any other kind of finishing. The floorings are free of PVC and chlorine. More than 88% of wood used for the hospital has been procured in compliance with the standards of Forest Stewardship Council guidelines.
The equipment used for construction was operated on biodiesel fuel. All the materials used for interiors such as adhesives, carpets, composite woods and paint have been chosen to have low emissions. HEPA filters have been installed throughout the hospital to improve air quality particularly for patients with high risks. Through the course of the project 12,300 tons of construction waste was diverted from landfills. According to Associate Hospital Administrator Loree Collett, the aim of the hospital was to incorporate LEED guidelines into the design and construction of the building.
