Solar Powered Scottish Toilets

The power of the sun is now being harnessed to provide hot water for public toilets on Portobello’s promenade.

The amenities block is the first of its type in Scotland and it is hoped that energy savings will mean the technology is introduced into other toilets across Edinburgh.

The toilets have a solar window that allows black plastic pipes to be heated by the sun. Cold water is heated in the pipes as it is circulated through them by a solar powered pumping system.

Scotland has set a target of generating 40 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. It is hoped that widespread adoption of simple systems such as this in domestic and public buildings will make this target readily achievable.
