Loyola University Chicago has installed a green roof for its new academic building named Cuneo Hall. The green roof will cover an area of 2,400 sq.ft. The University has chosen the LiveRoof Hybrid Green System for the green roof project.
LiveRoof has been designed in such a manner that soil to soil contact is maintained between modules and plants have enough room to grow within modules. Common factors such as nutrients, water and beneficial organisms are shared between modules. Such an arrangement helps in optimizing the health of plants, increasing sustainability and enhancing the benefits provided by a green roof.
Loyola University has already used the LiveRoof system for a green roof covering an area of 7,650 sq.ft above the Mundelein College building. This was part of a renovation project carried out in 2009. LiveRoof system was also installed for a green roof over an area of 5,400 sq.ft above the Norville Centre for Intercollegiate Athletics in June 2011. This is the seventh such installation carried out by Loyola University. Before the installation, the modules that are part of the LiveRoof system are vegetated fully with regional, fully mature and flourishing plants. This is done so that the plants do not get affected by extreme rooftop conditions. Regional growers who are licensed customise the selection of plants according to the requirements of every project to offer a high level of green roof performance at low operating costs. More than 600 LiveRoof installations over a total area of two million sq.ft have been completed till date.
