Gate Precast Company has completed the installation of precast concrete exterior for a new dormitory residence with four floors at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology located in Terre Haute, IN.
The dormitory covering an area of 70,000 sq.ft consists of 240 beds including suite-style apartments on the first floor and apartment style residences on the other three floors. Gate Precast collaborated with a design team comprising of Garmong Construction Services, the Project Architect, Construction manager and RATIO Architects to gain assistance in developing the precast cladding for the building.
The design team chose precast concrete provided by Gate Precast in order to hasten the process of construction, use the aesthetic and quality options provided by the company and remain within the budget provided to them. The construction was carried out by using the Design Assist method of delivery where an aggressive schedule was provided based on the 2012-2013 school year.
Insulated Architectural Precast Solutions for Universities
The dormitory building was installed within a period of two months and uses thin brick edge-to-edge insulation. The construction project for the whole campus will be completed over an 11 month period. The prefabricated concrete panels which consist of 3” and 6” concrete Wythes were manufactured through a controlled process in the factory. These wythes provide an edge-to-edge polystyrene insulation measuring 3” and an R-value of 16. The dormitory residence has been designed and built in order to receive LEED certification. The project has been made sustainable due to the usage of precast concrete since it reduces construction wastage, disturbances in the site, reduces noise, integrates design and enhances energy efficiency.
