New York based owner and manager of apartment buildings, Urban American Management has partnered with New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to create a series of energy-efficient projects as part of the Multifamily Performance Programme (MPP).
Urban American had earlier committed to enhance the efficiency of each building under the project by 15%-20%. More than 2,700 apartments were modified under the project.
Modifications included insulation, weather stripping, high efficiency lighting in hallways, enhanced sub metering and meters, occupancy and motion sensors, low flow water fixtures and aerators in bathrooms and kitchens, and replacement of boiler, window, refrigerators and kitchen appliances.
Over the past five years, the company has spent a total amount of $14 million towards upgrading energy systems and installing measures to reduce energy usage. Apart from the NYSERDA, Urban American has also worked with other institutions such as Harlem Community Development Corporation, which was responsible for weatherization projects for two buildings that were part of the MPP programme. Urban Americans is making continuous investments for more energy-efficient projects. One such project is the on-going work at 3333 Broadway which is the largest single multifamily building in the city of New York.
The company is also making reasonable investments in people in order to spread the importance of energy conservation and at the same time create jobs. Until now, it has recruited 50 personnel in supervision and maintenance roles as part of the Building Performance Institute Building Operator Certification programme that focuses on managing and conserving energy and enhancing the safety and health of people.
