A 240,000 sq.ft parking space constructed by Suffolk Construction at West Palm Beach has been awarded the LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council.
The parking space can accommodate 35 motor cycles, 763 cars and 80 bicycles. The parking space was designed and constructed by Jonathan Parks Architects and is located in a block adjacent to Sarasota Bay.
Initially the project was intended to reach LEED-CS. The main features of the parking space include an underground retention vault and cistern for storing and treating storm water that flows from the site. Part of the irrigation systems uses the runoff water. The materials that were used for the interiors were beyond the requirements of LEED. The parking space uses efficient energy management systems and LED lighting. The roof level has a solar carport along with plug ins and charging stations to charge electric vehicles. The parking space is designed in such a manner to allow natural light and ventilation to flow into all the levels of the space and at the same time, protecting all vehicles from direct sunlight. Suffolk Construction provides pre-construction, construction management, design and building services, and other general contract services to industries such as government, health care, science and technology, commerce and education.
