Angelo State University (ASU) unveils a new 22,000-square-foot recreation and wellness center, within its San Angelo, Texas campus. Designed by SmithGroupJJR, the $5.25 M worth, two-story Center for Human Performance was unveiled in the fall of 2011.
Located within the University’s Department of Kinesiology, the center was engineered and constructed to include academic and training activities, besides accommodating athletic and fitness programs.
The building includes a 9,000-square foot cardio or weight room and three-lane indoor track that measures 1/11 mi, in addition to a 40-foot tall rock climbing wall and 720-square foot bouldering structure. With over 7,000 students, the center’s objective is to offer excellent recreation and wellness programs related to leadership development, social interaction, and sportsmanship. This new facility will therefore benefit the students, staff and alumni.
The renovations on the facility were carried out by the designers of SmithGroupJJR. An exquisite glass curtain wall replaced the facility's brick north façade and windowless block. Advanced activity centers included cardio equipment, weight systems and segments of the track. A modified 18-foot by 92-foot mural system that stretches across the elevated building’s south wall, promotes recreation activities, besides providing aestheticism.
According to the university's master plan, restructured in 2007, the renovation was carried out. A mixture of multicolored brown brick, bronze metal window and cast stone highlights add to the elegance.
Safety systems were also incorporated in the facility, biometric hand scanners were installed for a safe and secure maintenance. This facilitates the university to regulate the operation of user groups and leverage several programming functions.
