Taiwan’s Yuan Ze University, in association with Far Eastern Group, one of the premier industrial aggregates of Taiwan, has contracted a globally- acclaimed artist, architect, and engineer Santiago Calatrava in order to design a new vibrant building facility within the University campus.
The project includes designing the Y.Z. Hsu Memorial Hall, dedicated to Mr. Yu-Ziang Hsu, the university's founder; a new Art and Design school, and a Performing Arts Center. The Performing Arts Center will accommodate a 500 seat theater and a 1,200 seat concert hall for experimental activities and traditional performances.
Calatrava's three buildings are located proximal to the main campus entrance, serving as a gateway leading to the university’s arts and education cultural performances. The project accentuates developing and expanding northern Taiwan's educational ventures globally, besides presenting the region with an exquisitely new landmark.
Calatrava, based on his architectural entry into Taiwan, decided to explore the local art and architecture to discover new spatial and formal themes. The Performing Arts Building, at the heart of the complex is a spectacular curving roof that is a representation of traditional Taiwanese and Chinese architecture. The Art and Design School and the Y.Z. Hsu Memorial are located below. The entire building is structured aesthetically with each building's roof resembling steel ribs.
Yuan Ze University’s new building complex project is one of the major educational structure designing projects by Calatrava. Other noteworthy projects by this renowned architect include a master plan for the University of South Florida Polytechnic's new campus in the United States and the University of Rome Tor Vergata's campus in Italy.
