Public Works and Government Services Canada have declared that it will award a contract for further renovation of the Wellington Building, which is one of the major projects with regards to restructuring the core Parliament Buildings.
Situated at 180 Wellington Street, the Wellington Building is a representative legacy building. The building is being altered to have an enduring significance by modifying and improving its infrastructure and safety systems.
The administrative office space will be converted to parliamentary area so that the East Block and the Centre Block can be vacated and totally restored.
The Wellington Building renovation is considered to be a part of the Parliamentary Precinct. The renovations of structures within the Parliamentary Precinct ensure that they will still function to be the heart of Canada's democratic system even in the 21st century.
The operation is carried out in two phases to accelerate the completion of the project. The first phase was initiated in 2010 which intended exterior restoration, interior demolition, and structural seismic improvement. The next phase of the project includes renovating the interior space with 69 parliamentary offices and 10 committee rooms, provided with new electrical, mechanical, and control systems. The operation is scheduled for January 2012.
The construction management contract process was supervised by an independent Fairness Monitor to ensure proper operation in a reasonable and observable manner.
The entire renovation of the Wellington Building is predicted to be completed by the year, 2015.
