Avnet, a distributor of computer products, electronic components and embedded technology has declared that it has obtained the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificate for its divisional office in Marlton, N.J from the U.S. Green Building Council.
This is Avnet’s second building that lives up to the LEED certification standard, and develops upon Avnet’s tradition of sustainable business practices from the manner of data center operation to its dedication to lessening the company’s worldwide carbon impact. Particularly, IDG’s Computerworld in recent times named Avnet as one of the top 12 eco-friendly-IT organizations in the U.S. for using technology to lessen energy consumption.
Avnet achieved Gold level certification standards in January 2010 for its division in Madison, Ala. An Avnet division in North Reading, Mass. is presently in the course of obtaining the LEED certificate.
Avnet determined to move the New Jersey office to a new 17,000 sq.ft area as part of its commitment to sustainability and made it mandatory to integrate an eco-friendly design.
Avnet was able to achieve 45 points for this new office for the certification by recycling 77% of demolition debris and construction from being discarded in a incinerator or landfill and got high marks for compensating 50% electricity consumption with green energy. Other significant accomplishments include reducing the lighting power by 18%, and using low-emitting voc that lessens the indoor air contaminants. 32% of water savings were achieved by installing low-flow fixtures and 30% of furniture and building materials had recyclable content.
Bob Gracz, director and vice president of Avnet’s Corporate Real Estate said that Avnet will promote green practices and ensure a healthy working environment for its employees as the company expands and the LEED certification is evidence to its commitment to the green initiatives and its continuing efforts to reduce Avnet’s brunt on the world.
