Sika Sarnafil Secures Plastics Recycling Technologies and Applications Award

The Society of Plastics Engineers has presented the Plastics Recycling Technologies and Applications Award to Sika Sarnafil, a pioneer in thermoplastic waterproofing and roofing systems, at the Global Plastics Environmental Conference conducted on October 18, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The PVC recycling program of Sika Sarnafil is designed for the recovery and recycling of vinyl-roofing membrane at the end of its operating life into a new roofing membrane. The award further differentiates the program that received recognition in 2009 from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. The program is simple and streamlined to facilitate the participation of building owners and contractors. The company supplies pallets and containers free of charge to contractors.

Sika Sarnafil is the only manufacturer producing single ply roofing with a program for recycling old roofs and is the only firm having UL Environment certification for its recycling claims. Since 2004, 27.4 M lbs of post-industrial vinyl roofs have been recycled by the company, and 852,000 lbs of post-consumer roofs have been recycled since 2005.

Sika Sarnafil’s Senior Vice President, Brian Whelan stated that Sika Sarnafil relentlessly attends to energy conservation problems with its innovative resource recovery program. From the waste stream, the company recovers over 98% of vinyl raw materials and recycles them into waterproofing and roofing membranes, he said. The company facilitates its customers to meet their sustainability targets by providing energy-efficient systems that reduce environmental and waste, he added.
