A recent survey released by Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) has rated Thomas Properties Group, a public real estate and construction company known for its eco-friendly and green construction practices, as the number one company in North America for its eco-friendly executions.
The 2011 research report of GRESB is the result of surveying around 340 biggest real estate companies all over the world. The survey concentrated on important environmental performance indices such as greenhouse gas emissions, waste and energy and water consumption. The research utilized 2009 to 2010 portfolio data of the participating companies to assess the key performances and improvements.
Thomas Properties Group is focused to have 100% of its constructions rated for ENERGY STAR and LEED certified by the year 2012. The company introduced sustainable initiatives as early as in 1989. The Cal/EPA headquarters developed by the company in 1990 has become the first LEED platinum certified highrise building in the United States.
In the year 2010, 38-year old City National Plaza, a twin-tower complex located with around 2.5 million sqft of retail and office space in the business district of Los Angeles has earned the LEED gold certification and become the largest and oldest property to earn such certification. The company has so far earned LEED certification for over 10 million sq ft are of office space through LEED EB O&M program.
