Ballast Nedam and Hurks partnership combination has been contracted by Prorail for the building of a new OV (public transport) terminal in Breda. The proposed terminal will remain a local public transport hub with a bus and train station, shops, offices and houses all under a single roof.
The planned transport hub designed by the architectural company Koen van Velsen will include four restaurants/cafes, a shopping space of 9000 sq m, an office space of 20.000 sq m and 150 apartment constructions. Ballast Nedam and Hurks combination have won the competitive bid valued around € 130 million. The permit applications for building are being processed and preliminary work is anticipated to commence soon.
The new proposed terminal will be constructed on the location of the existing train station and it will connect the city center to the Belcrum district. The railway is presently bordered by abandoned yards, factory complexes and old residential areas. The proposed terminal is anticipated to bring in a total transformation to the region such as to make it one among the biggest urban expansion challenges in the Netherlands
The intended terminal will have three platforms and seven railways and will have the capability to manage 16 trains every hour, which also includes four high-speed shuttles a new feature for Breda. The proposed bus platform providing easy connectivity to railway services will have enough space to park 20 buses. The terminal roof will have enough space to park 720 cars and the construction design will offer parking facility to over 4,000 bicycles both outside and inside the terminal.
The terminals of the north and south sides will be linked by a large and roomy underground shopping area. Open and inviting squares will be provided on the rear and front sides with wide approach roads to offer easy access. The terminal will also have houses and offices within the construction.
