The American Clean Skies Foundation (ACSF), a Washington, D.C., placed nonprofit association, has submitted its $450 million plan to change the waterfront site of the Potomac River Generating Station (PRGS) utilizing coal power and located on Alexandria, VA’s north end into an eco-friendly and mixed-use type of community.
The submitted plan known as, "Potomac River Green," is developed with the participation of environmental groups, business community, real estate companies, utility consultants, financial advisers, urban planners and a team of architects under the initiative of Gregory C. Staple, Chief Executive of ACSF. RKG Associates, a Virginia-based economic and fiscal adviser and Cooper Carry, an architectural company based in Atlanta, have also participated in the discussions in shaping the plan.
The Potomac River Green Plan will include features such as 96 town units and 467 multi-family homes, 114,500 sq.ft space for retail and restaurants, 89,600 sq.ft office space, which includes a clean energy enterprise center to nurture clean energy and new technology enterprises, a functional energy museum to display energy technologies of the 21st century, a hotel with 125 rooms and CNG supply and electric car recharging facilities. The location will have ease of access to public transport, mass transit and water taxis. The constructions will include a range of energy efficient features, construction techniques and reuse of materials to lay gardens, streets and paths and will remain LEED certified with an enhanced level of greenery through the implementation of the community gardens.
The developments planned with an estimate of $450 million will bring in notable level of ecological, positive economic impacts to the location and generate over 2,200 jobs.
