Lux Research Predicts Growth in Dynamic Windows and Advanced Insulation Market

The latest Lux Research report titled “Opening the Thermal Envelope: Emerging Innovation in Dynamic Windows and Advanced Insulation,” finds that green buildings will be more sought after in the construction industry in the coming years.

It points out that this shift for energy competent buildings will necessitate energy advancements in building components such as foundation, roof, walls, and windows to offer thermal enveloped construction.

It remarks that though the presently offered energy solutions continue to lead the construction market, some of the budding technologies such as advanced insulation and dynamic smart windows which constitute only a miniscule percentage of the current market share will grow into an $829 million market by 2020. The report delves in detail on dynamic windows and points out that the dynamic smart windows which can automatically change from clear to darkened state to offer shading inside the building from the sun’s rays will alone grow into a $418 market by the year 2020. The report finds that Europe will lead the segment and surpass the US with a 57% market share for dynamic windows due to government regulations on building efficiency standards and rising costs of energy prices.

The research finds that other rising technologies such as phase change of materials and aerogels will also garner entries in the thermal envelop segment with $130 million and $230 million worth markets respectively by 2020. The research finds that the vacuum insulation panels may barely survive in the market due to high costs of production and limited usability and predict will achieve only a moderate $50 million sale in 2020.

The report discusses about the present players in the segment such as Soladigm, Sage and its partner Saint-Gobain and Pleotint and their production facilities. It finds the dynamic windows technologies will soon experience a cost reduction of 2% for hermochromics and 5% for electrochromics which may further improve their markets. It predicts that if the market witnesses such type of cost reduction twice then it will cross $1.4 billion level.
