Axion International, a manufacturer of industrial construction products and railroad ties utilizing 100% recycled plastic, declared that it has obtained a purchase order worth $170,000 from Vertech through its business associate Sicut Holding.
The order is meant for the recycled structural composite (RSC) material, produced by the company and to be utilized in building a plastic bridge in Scotland. The bridge will be the first of its kind construction utilizing plastic outside the USA.
The proposed 12x90 ft long bridge will substitute the present road bridge constructed using steel beam and timber deck. The two masonry-built piers and abutments that support the existing bridge and are in good condition will be used to support the new Recycled Structural Composite Bridge designed by Axion. The piers have a clear span of 28 ft, which will ensue in three efficient spans at 30 ft symbolizing the longest single spans to be built utilizing the unique material. The bridge designed according to European standards will endure a load of around 45 t.
The prefabricated parts of the bridge will be produced in Portland, PA, located Axion Plant in the USA and transported to Liverpool through a container ship and then will be sent to Edinburgh. The bridge designed by Cass Hayward of Wales, an architectural consulting company, will be sent in six sections and will be assembled onsite for installation by a local Scottish contractor. The bridge construction is anticipated to be completed before the onset of winter in Scotland.
