A group of Hampshire local authorities and housing associations have celebrated the successful completion of the Hampshire Solar Streets project.
This innovative project has seen the installation of solar panels into 15 homes within three Hampshire streets. Three authorities, Eastleigh Borough Council, Southampton City Council and East Hants District Council, from the Southern Home Energy Conservation and Action Network (SHECANe) supported by their Local Energy Support Programme, have been working in partnership with Hyde Housing Association and Drum Housing Association to put solar panels into houses in Southampton, Eastleigh and Petersfield.
The aim of the project was to provide a local demonstration project for solar water heating, a technology which is strongly supported by all the partner organisations involved in the project. The solar systems will save an estimated 18,870kWh energy and 3,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and were installed by local company Wessex Solar Systems. The homes chosen to receive solar panels are all in visible locations to raise awareness of solar technology. The project also aimed to reduce energy costs for the tenants which will be achieved by both the solar water heating and also by energy efficiency measures which will be installed shortly with support from London Energy. The project received over £20,000 from the Government’s Clear Skies fund. This was matched by contributions from the partner housing associations and local authorities. In addition funding has also been obtained from Hampshire County Council, Government Office for the South East and South East England Development Agency.
