McDermott International to Install Oil and Gas Pipelines in Gulf of Mexico

One of the subsidiary companies of McDermott International has been granted an accord by PEMEX Exploración y Producción to provide construction and deployment services. The accord will require the company to install three oil and gas pipelines with diameters ranging from 8” to 20” in Bay of Campeche, Mexico. The contract is valued over US$50 million.

The sub-sea engineering design group of the company located in Houston will offer installation solutions for the project. The fabrication work for the project will be carried out from the company’s construction yard located in Altamira, Mexico. The company is planning to commence the pipeline installation and construction work in the Q2 of 2011. The Altamira facility will fabricate risers, sub-sea tie-in assembly, clamps and guards and extra platform piping.

The installation work will be completed by DB16, a strategically placed, deepwater and shallow combination barge. The vessel is fitted with three 100 kip tension machines and five tailor-made automatic welding systems to maintain production stability and high level output. The barge is designed to deploy S-Laying pipes of up to 48” in diameter. The vessel also features a recovery hoist to lay down pipes in deep water. The barge utilizes a 200-foot deep water truss stringer fitted with an underwater block and an A-Frame to lower structures weighing 62 tons into water with depths measuring 10,000 feet. It can lift a maximum of 94.5 tons from water depths measuring 6,000 feet.

The development in the Gulf of Mexico where McDermott International needs to provide its services is placed in 170 feet deep water. The proposed pipeline will extend from the Kambesah Wells Recoverer structure and link with the Ixtoc-A platform and the Kutz TA platform.
