The U.S. Green Building Council awarded the leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) gold certification to the Fortaleza hall constructed by SC Johnson. The hall was inaugurated on January 2010 with the aim of offering a green and stimulating environment for their employees, families and the wider community.
Fortaleza hall secured numerous credits in six groups such as innovation and design, water efficiency, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, energy and atmosphere and sustainable sites. Several green features have been incorporated into the Fortaleza hall, which has made it eligible for the LEED Gold certification.
Building materials such as low VOC paints, varnishes, oculus glass, caulks, terrazzo flooring, bamboo flooring, forest stewardship council wood and U.S black walnut were used. Building equipment used included low waste equipment, water efficient fixtures and rainwater harvesting systems. Energy efficient features such as energy saving lighting and an exterior overhang to ensure less solar gain during the hot months and more during the cold were incorporated in the structure. The floor system is an innovative one called AIRFLOOR that can save energy by radiating either hot or cool air depending on the climatic conditions. The Fortaleza hall also has rotating doors and an underground tunnel to improve the energy saving capacity.
