The Frito-Lay Killingly, Connecticut, manufacturing facility of PepsiCo, has achieved LEED Gold certification under the existing building category from the U.S. Green Building Council. The 31 year old building underwent reconstruction services to achieve the certification.
For the purpose of achieving LEED gold certification, the Killingly facility of the company implemented a range of green construction and design features and introduced engineering and practices to conserve water. The Co-Generation system installed at the facility in 1999 enabled it save around 46% of natural gas consumption per every pound of product produced and cut down on its electric power usage by 10% per pound while cutting down the emission levels of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide. The waste heat generated from its potato frying process is captured to provide warmth to the building during winter.
The water conserving facility in the building achieves nearly 15% saving of water for every pound of product produced and the changes introduced in corn cooking and transfer procedures has reduced the water usage. The facility recycles all its waste products and allows less than 1% to reach the landfill. It re-utilizes the cardboard boxes to ship for a number of times and sends its food wastes for use as animal feed.
Frito-Lay Killingly facility measuring over 289,000 square foot is located over 81.5 acres of land area. The facility manufactures snacks such as Fritos corn chips, Lay's potato chips, Doritos tortilla chips and Tostitos tortilla chips.
