VAST Enterprises, a company that produces paver bricks from environmental friendly composite recycled materials, has declared that it has been granted a Leadership in Sustainability Award by the U.S. Green Building Council – Minnesota Chapter (USGBC-Minnesota) and the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The inaugural Best Green Market Development award is presented to businesses, which focus on manufacturing green products, or green process or services to bring quantifiable ecological and economic benefits.
The company has formulated a secured material science technology that converts used recycled plastic and rubber products into green building product known as composite masonry. The rubber-plastic composite, developed by VAST, has around 95% recycled content and has performance properties of a stone structure. The composite pavers provide a natural look. They are durable and strong and provide design flexibility to substitute clay brick or molded concrete utilized in landscape, hardscape and porous and flat roofs.
Plastics and rubber recycled from around 5,000 tires and 150,000 plastic containers are utilized to produce 10,000 square feet of pavers, thus reducing landfill use. Moreover, installing VAST pavers of 10,000 square feet in the place of concrete pavers offsets nearly 395,000 pounds of carbon dioxide discharges. Till date, the company has saved over four million pounds of plastics and rubbers from reaching the landfills and has cut down over 1.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions into the air.
