Owens Corning declared that its global headquarters located at Toledo in Ohio has received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. In 2007, the building, under the LEED-EB program, received the prestigious silver certification.
The building has already received ENERGY STAR rating and is currently placed within the top 25% of the energy-efficient constructions in the USA.
The building designed by Cesar Pelli was constructed in 1996 and includes a number of eco-friendly features such as efficient use of daylight, under-floor ventilation system for energy-effective delivery of air, recycling of office partitions and carpet. Efforts have been taken to plant water-conserving native plants and over 55% of the site is restored to the natural environment. For the purpose of achieving the gold certification, the design and operations of the building underwent changes intone with the requirements of LEED.
According to Frank O'Brien-Bernini, Chief Sustainability Officer of Owens Corning, the building represents the obligation of the company to remain eco-friendly and energy-efficient. He further added that the building also stays as an example to show how the energy conserving practices can result in cost-effective functioning.
