Pike Research’s Report Predicts Surge in Demand For Building-Integrated And Building-Applied Solar Products

Pike Research has announced the inclusion of a report titled “Building-Integrated Photovoltaics” in its range of offerings. The report anticipates a shift in solar energy markets towards building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and building-applied photovoltaics (BAPV) products.

The report analyses the growing BIPV and BAPV markets all over the world by providing details on the market drivers, technology issues, economics and the key market players. The report includes information about the region wise base level and top level forecasts for the BIPV/BAPV installed capacity, the global clean technology along with the estimates of wholesale market revenue up to 2016.

Pike Research indicates that the global BIPV solar market, mainly driven by lower costs, will witness a robust growth in the coming years and predicts that the annual revenue will reach around $4 billion in 2016 from the present $744 million in 2010. It indicates that a more rapid growth will be witnessed by the BAPV market to achieve $5.8 billion in the same period. The report expects that France and Germany will persist in leading the global BIPV/BAPV market in terms of MW installation capacity per year. Pike Research indicates that the market share in the European Union will come down from 55% in 2009 to 32% in 2016 due to the growing demand in North America and Asia Pacific regions. The report anticipates that by 2016 Asian market will surpass the European market with a capacity of 800 MW every year.

According to Peter Asmus, senior analyst, the cost per watt is coming down very fast for BIPV and it will speed up the demand for BIPV and BAPV products. He anticipates that the cost per watt of BIPV/BAPV will come down to $2.50 by 2016. Asmus anticipates that the continuous efficiency upgrades achieved in c-Si and easy-to-adjust thin-film solar panels and shingles will increase the returns from the BIPV/BAPV and reduce the payback durations. He believes that the improvements will ultimately encourage suppliers of building materials and other retailers of normal residential markets to improve their sale of BIPV/BAPV solar products.
