Raising the bar for green operations, CertainTeed’s local siding plant in Claremont, N.C., has earned the globally recognized International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 certification.
Over the past three years the Claremont plant has been increasing their commitment to protecting the environment and since implementing a recycling program in 2007, the plant is on track to achieve an 82 percent reduction in waste this year.
ISO 14001 standards were created to help companies minimize their environmental impact and achieve continual improvement of environmental performance. To secure the certification, CertainTeed developed a formalized environmental management system that underwent rigorous evaluations through a third party review.
“ISO 14001 instills a culture of environmental responsibility and continuous improvement that maximizes the sustainability of our operations says,” Cheryl Gates, Six Sigma Master Black Belt for CertainTeed’s Siding Group. “The example set by the Claremont team helps CertainTeed continue to lead the way in sustainable building by developing products that are manufactured with the environment top-of-mind.”
In addition to ISO 14001 certification, the Claremont siding plant focuses on manufacturing sustainable exterior siding products with the development of vinyl siding and accessories including CertainTeed’s Vytec® brand of vinyl siding products. All CertainTeed polymer and vinyl siding products help building professionals qualify toward credits for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) through the U.S. Green Building Council and certification through the National Association of Home Builders’ Green Building Guidelines. An active member of the community for 20 years, Claremont’s 157 employees support the local Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Salvation Army, United Way, Conover School for Mentally Challenged Children and Hickory Soup Kitchen. Several members of Claremont’s leadership team are also involved in the local Chamber of Commerce.
