Tecnalia Research & Innovation has been selected by the United Nations for the redesign of the energy strategy of the Croatian city of Sisak.
The objective of this project is to convert this local authority area into a Smart Energy City, targeting those elements of infrastructure that have to be undertaken in the city over the next 15 years. A methodology will be developed which will systematically enhance the energy infrastructure of the city in the long term, acting as a pilot case for the country overall, which is in the process of adhesion to the European Union.
The plan involves the establishment of a global, comprehensive strategy for implementing energy efficiency measures for the city of Sisak, integrating existing projects into new initiatives. This multisectoral strategy will coordinate actions involving built environment, industry, services for the city and its transport infrastructure, with the aim of achieving drastic reductions in energy consumption.
Tecnalia is developing this pilot project through its Energy and Construction Units. During the project preliminary tasks, an inventory of emissions will be undertaken, to be followed by the strategic planning of actions. These tasks will meet the responsibilities of the city of Sisak as one of the cities signing up to the Covenant of Mayors. This commitment is in line with the 20-20-20 target of the EU, by which member states pledge to reduce CO2 emissions by 20 % by 2020, improve energy efficiency by 20 % and supply 20 % of its energy consumption with renewable energy.
In the redesign of the city, not only will energy aspects be taken into account (such as intelligent networks or the energy efficiency of buildings), but also social ones, such as transport and the efficient management of water. For these last two aspects, Tecnalia will collaborate with the University of the Basque Country and both Basque and Croatian engineers specialised in transport.
