The Bison Pop-Up Park™ won Architectural Record’s Special Construction & Exterior Improvements category.
The Bison Pop-Up Park creates a decking platform that extends a level and natural wood surface from the curb over parking spaces. Planters overflowing with greenery connected by railing creatively provide the park’s border. Amenities like café tables, bike racks and solar powered accent lights create an alluring and pleasant atmosphere for the community to enjoy.
Retail establishments and city governments are partnering to make these unique outdoor spaces a reality. Last August New York City installed their first Pop-up Café located in the Financial District at Pearl and Broad. "The city's first pop-up café is a great, cost-effective way to help businesses while provide much-needed seating along our crowded sidewalks," said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. "Innovative interventions like this help make our streets into destinations and improve the quality of life for the thousands of people who live, work and play in Lower Manhattan."
The second award winner is the Bison Cube™ which won Architectural Record’s Furnishing category. The Bison Cube is an innovative modular feature that makes it easy to add planters, seating and/or storage to Bison paver pedestal systems. The new Bison Cube provides infinite design choices for creative outdoor decking environments. Each Bison Cube measures 2’ x 2’ which is the same size as a Bison Wood Tile - instead of installing a deck tile, set a Bison Cube in its place.
Bison decks are an ideal solution to building decks over sloping or uneven surfaces like flat rooftops and streets. Deck pedestals easily adjust up or down to accommodate for uneven surfaces creating a level deck surface. Bison decks offer numerous benefits when a modular deck (for removal or future substrate access), sustainability and positive drainage is essential.
Architectural Record is the premiere publication for architects and every year they invite “a group of product experts — including several who have created their own product designs — to help select the year’s best new products.” “Our mission is to provide innovative products for decking applications that have unique installation requirements,” says Lisa von Gunten, Vice President of Bison Innovative Products. “The Bison product development team is honored to receive this recognition from Architectural Record for our two newest product lines.”
Last year Bison won Architectural Record’s Editor’s pick for its FSC® Certified (FSC-C013454) Massaranduba Wood Tile. These Wood Tiles are commercial-grade decking squares preassembled to measure 2’ x 2’. They work with Bison Deck Supports and Fastening Kit (patent pending) for building decks on rooftops, green roofs, terraces and plaza decks.
