Clay drainage systems from Hepworth are to provide the ‘foundations’ for accommodation at the largest naval base in Western Europe.
The SuperSleve and SuperSeal systems are to be used to provide the sewerage and stormwater infrastructure for the £220 million ARMADA PFI project. This will provide and service the single living accommodation at Devonport. The development, being undertaken by Interserve Project Services Ltd, involves the design and construction of new accommodation and refurbishment of existing facilities. It will provide accommodation for 55 senior officers, 195 junior officers, 600 warrant officers and senior ratings and 700 junior ratings, as well as for transient personnel.
A key factor in the specification of drainage systems was the ability to offer long term performance in situ as well as high levels of sustainability. Clay’s proven durability and chemical resistance combine with the ability to match a broad range of environmental criteria to make it the preferred choice of consultants Jacob Gibbs & Associates for the development. The SuperSleve and SuperSeal systems utilise a readily available raw material source, require less energy in manufacture than many alternative pipe materials and can be laid with minimal requirements for imported aggregate, all helping to minimise environmental impact.
With a design life of 100 years and a practical life of much longer, the systems can be expected to provide minimum maintenance performance for years to come.
Should the requirement arise at some point in the distant future, the pipes can readily be re-cycled for other construction related uses.
