Hamilton to Speak at First Annual TCA Convention

David Hamilton, Vice President of Elkins Constructors, Inc., has been added to list of speakers during the first annual convention hosted by the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA).

To be held Oct. 12-15 in Atlanta, Ga., the Tilt-Up Convention's theme, "Tilt-Up 4 Today: Energy, Environment, Economy, Efficiency," was selected to highlight the diverse and growing attributes of the site cast Tilt-Up method.

Ed Sauter, TCA Executive Director, said Hamilton’s expertise and leadership role in Tilt-Up construction make him an ideal speaker. Hamilton’s presentation will highlight lessons learned on the Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church -- the project with the distinction of having the tallest Tilt-Up panel in the United States as well as several additional challenges they have met with success on recent projects.

Located in Lecanto, Fla., Tilt-up construction was chosen for Seven Rivers to achieve financial, structural, architectural and schedule goals. At almost 93 feet high, the church’s front panel, along with seven smaller panels, rise up like a crown. Find out how this majestic church came to be through a detailed explanation about the details of the construction. Through a pictorial presentation, participants will learn about: panel planning, construction and erection process; how the panels were sized and laid out in the project planning stage and then cast on an undersized and occupied site; how the panels were raised and braced; and how the Elkins team included the congregation on the historical day the panels were raised. Participants will leave with expanded knowledge about the early decisions that need to be made on such a mammoth project and what the project team learned as a result of this experience.

Joining Hamilton will be Scott B. Olson, Project Superintendent, to assist with the presentation and answer any technical questions. Hamilton, a 20-year veteran of Elkins Constructors, Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., currently serves as Vice President and Project Executive for Elkins Constructors, Inc. He directs the company’s automotive and worship markets, while also working with a few select private clients, and is the 2005 Chairman of the Florida First Coast Chapter of the Associated Building and Contractors. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Mathematics from Milligan College in Johnson City, Tenn., Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1988 and joined the company in 1989 following graduation. Hamilton also earned an Executive Master’s in Business Administration in 2002 and now serves on the Advisory Board for the Davis College of Business.

To be held at the Hyatt Regency Buckhead, the Convention is an evolution of the Association's biennial Symposium and Design Charette events.

Jim Baty, Technical Director of the TCA, said the three-day Tilt-Up Convention will feature intensive training and education seminars for contractors and engineers, as well as a trade show, building tour and focused sessions on marketing and architectural design. Construction topics include pre-construction planning, forming and casting, finishes, environmentally-controlled structures, connections, rigging and lifting, troubleshooting and much more.

Architectural sessions will focus on the state-of-the-art Tilt-Up methods, as well as how these practices are changing the landscape of today’s building market. The marketing sessions will focus on roundtable discussion groups providing the opportunity to learn how to implement media relations and other marketing tactics from the TCA. Construction personnel, marketing professionals, engineers, architects and owners are all invited and encouraged to attend in order to maximize the benefit to each company.

The Convention also serves as another venue for the Tilt-Up Supervisor’s Certification exam – a joint program of the TCA and the American Concrete Institute.
