Behringer Harvard announced today that it has achieved LEED certification for five properties in its extensive asset portfolio including One City Centre, One and Two Eldridge Place, and One Briar Lake Plaza – which are prominent, Class A office properties in Houston – and 1325 G Street in Washington, D.C.
Each of these office properties has achieved EB O&M Gold LEED certification. An office tower in Chicago, 10 & 120 S. Riverside, has achieved EB O&M Silver LEED certification.
"Behringer Harvard has successfully implemented sustainable practices and achieved LEED certifications for properties that range from new construction to existing buildings of varied vintage," said Ms. Michele Langenberg, Director of Sustainability for Behringer Harvard, who is responsible for overall project oversight for the company's certification initiatives. "These are significant accomplishments, achieved in part through the creation of a customized plan for each certification project that effectively addresses its unique sustainability challenges."
One City Centre, a 31-story office tower constructed in 1961 and renovated in 1999, comprises approximately 600,000 square feet of office space.
More than half a million square feet of office space is comprised in One and Two Eldridge Place, adjoining office towers of 12 and 14 stories, respectively, that were built in the mid-1980s.
Built in 2000, One Briar Lake Plaza is a 20-story property comprising more than 500,000 square feet of high-quality office space.
Constructed in 1969, and renovations commencing in 1997, 1325 G Street is a 10-story, 303,563-square-foot office building two blocks east of the White House in the nation's capital.
With twin towers of 21 stories each, comprising 1.3 million square feet of office space, 10 & 120 S. Riverside Plaza were constructed in the mid-1960s in Chicago's West Loop near Union Station.
Significant reductions in water usage were achieved at each of the newly certified properties in Houston. Additional sustainable practices include comprehensive recycling, renewable energy purchases and filtration to improve air quality.
Behringer Harvard has an ongoing commitment to sustainable practices, and the company continues to expand its green building initiatives. In addition to the certifications outlined above, Three Eldridge in Houston has earned LEED Core & Shell Gold certification, and Westway One, also in Houston, has earned LEED Core & Shell Silver certification. Another Behringer Harvard property, Bank of America Plaza in Charlotte, N.C., has earned LEED EB O&M Gold certification. Thirty-five properties owned by Behringer Harvard's investment programs have earned the ENERGY STAR label for prudent energy management strategies, representing 45 percent of the square footage available in Behringer Harvard's office properties.
