Schindler Elevator Corporation employees teamed up with members of Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver on Saturday, December 4th, 2010 to build homes for four local families.
To help fund the project, Schindler donated $2,500 to purchase some of the building materials for the build sites. In addition, in lieu of their usual holiday party, 30 employees and family members from the local Schindler office rolled up their sleeves and volunteered alongside the future homeowners to further the builds.
“Schindler employees have always put an emphasis on supporting the communities where they live and work, but it is a special privilege to be a part of a build like this around the holidays,” said Geoff Paquette, district manager, Schindler Elevator Corporation, Denver District. “It is a testament to the spirit and generosity of our employees that they chose to celebrate their achievements and good fortune this holiday season by volunteering and making a difference in the lives of these families.”
The homes will provide the families with high-quality, affordable housing and allow them to realize the dream of home ownership during this important time of year.
The future homeowners
One home, part of a duplex located in Englewood, Colorado will help single mother Yvette and her two daughters realize their dream of homeownership. Yvette and her family have had their share of housing challenges. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, Yvette fled the unstable, war-challenged country to seek out the American dream almost ten years ago. The second unit in the duplex will provide Patricia, a counselor and peer mentor at a rehabilitation clinic with a home of her own. She is looking forward to the day that she can host Thanksgiving dinner with her kids and grandkids.
A second home located in Englewood, Colorado will help young mother Marisol provide her two children with a stable, affordable home where they can live and grow.
The final home involved in the build will provide a home for grandparents Vivian and Mel to raise their grandkids in Denver, Colorado. Their new home is a single-family home with wide doorways and handicapped accessible bathrooms to accommodate Vivian’s wheelchair, allowing her to do laundry and shower unassisted. All of the families hope to occupy their new homes by February of next year.
