Hines announced today that Zielo Shopping Pozuelo has received Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® for Core & Shell (CS) rating system.
The property is the first shopping center in Europe to attain this designation. It was originally pre-certified to the Silver level.
Hines Spain Managing Director Jamie Rea said, “We are very pleased with this achievement, as it sets a new sustainability benchmark for retail in Europe. The certification will be seen as a positive by shoppers, tenants and future investors.”
Designed by Alberto Martín Caballero, the three-level, 172,000-square-foot retail center, which opened in October 2009, houses more than 60 shops and restaurants. The property features a large central atrium, which is flooded with natural light, and rooftop terraces with impressive views of the Casa de Campo and the Madrid skyline.

- Water use reduction through installation of low-flow fixtures
- Outdoor air delivery monitoring
- No use of harmful CFC refrigerants
- 91 percent construction waste diverted from landfills
