KBR (NYSE: KBR) announced that its Building Group has been awarded a $33 million contract by Washington, D.C.-based development partners Erkiletian and Jefferson Apartment Group for the construction of The Asher, a planned mixed-use development in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Building Group’s Vienna, Virginia regional office will lead the project. Construction is already under way with completion anticipated in June 2012.
“This important project for Erkiletian, one of Washington, D.C.’s most established and respected developers, follows the Building Group’s recent completion of several award-winning projects in the D.C. area,” said Luther Cochrane, Senior Vice President, KBR and Chairman of the Building Group. “Erkiletian’s selection of the Building Group to construct The Asher is testament to our expertise and experience in mixed-use projects, as well as our sustainable building practices.”
Designed with a number of green building features, the project is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED® Silver certification. The mixed-use development is expected to consist of two buildings — one with six stories and the other with three stories — which will be connected by a two-level, below-grade parking garage.
The Asher’s residential component, anticipated to include 206 apartment units, will offer energy-efficient appliances, and the overall complex will feature an extensive water-saving system and an advanced waste-management system.
Planned amenities include a state-of-the-art business center, fitness center, residents’ club, and a media and entertainment room. The exterior architecture incorporates Spanish-style roofing and a multi-brick façade. The property will feature multiple roof terraces with scenic views of Washington, D.C.
