CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION magazine has selected Dekorbetong’s (Ålesund – Norway) Concrete Garden project as its sixth annual Decorative Concrete Project of the Year.
The project includes an addition to the hillside home, a second-story level concrete deck, retaining walls, a fountain and spa, planters, seating areas, a textured patio deck, and a curving stairway leading to the upper floor of the house. Every concrete element contains colored, textured surfaces.
The most unique element of the project is the method and the techniques used for molding and hand shaping fresh concrete into vertical applications such as stairs, walls and edges. The most distinctive part is the stair connecting the upper level porch with the garden. Ready-mixed concrete was dumped onsite and immediately cast and hand shaped. Side walls of the stair were formed first before finishing the steps.
“Decorative concrete is becoming more important in the competitive world of concrete construction,” said editor in chief Tim Gregorski. “This year the winning projects distinguish true artists in the field who surmount challenges of the current times and bring originality to design in the concrete community.”
2010’s Project of the Year winners represent outstanding artistry in decorative concrete across the industry. The winning projects embody the best concrete artistry has to offer, a review of the best design and techniques of decorative concrete. The winners are featured in the November issue of CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION. They include one overall “Project of the Year,” three honorable mentions and one Readers' Choice. This year more than 800 CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION readers voted for their favorite project. The winner is a Las Vegas-based restaurant featuring graffiti-like artwork on the floor.
