E&B Paving, Inc., an Anderson, Ind.-based asphalt and concrete paving contracting firm, received a 2010 National “Excellence in Concrete Pavement” Gold Award in the Airport Overlays Category from the American Concrete Paving Association (ACPA) for its runway, taxiway and apron rehabilitation work at the Jasper County Municipal Airport in Rensselaer, Ind.
This national honor follows earlier recognition for E&B’s work on this project by the ACPA’s Indiana Chapter and the American Concrete Institute.
E&B’s Concrete Division, based in the firm’s Rochester, Ind. office, completed the 6” concrete overlay on the 4,000-foot long x 60-foot wide runway using 4,971 cubic yards of ready mix concrete supplied by the Remington, Ind. plant of E&B’s parent company, Irving Materials, Inc. (IMI). To start the process, E&B’s subsidiary firm, Specialties Company, milled the existing asphalt runway to a profile grade and milled the existing apron two inches. An asphalt paving crew from E&B’s Rochester office supported the effort by paving the taxiways and apron.
In total, the $1.42 million project required two weeks to complete and covered 26,680 square yards of concrete pavement. While the Jasper County Board of Aviation Commissioners’ concrete strength specification called for 725 psi in 28 days, the IMI-supplied concrete averaged 843 psi in that timeframe.
“Having IMI, Specialties and the E&B Rochester office partner with us on this successful project was very instrumental in E&B receiving the ACPA National Gold Award. It was a great example of how our family of companies came together to complete a project,” says E&B Concrete Division Vice President Ron Zink.
E&B Concrete Division team members will accept the award in December at the ACPA’s annual meeting in Bonita Springs, Fla. This team received a similar ACPA category honor in 2009 when it won the National Excellence in Concrete Pavement Gold Award for its overlay work on the runway at the Delphi, Ind. airport.
