Coffman Specialties, Inc., a San Diego based engineering and construction company specializing in large civil and government projects, was awarded a joint venture contract with Ames Construction of Burnsville, MN, to rehabilitate a vital irrigation canal running through the Gila River Indian Community, near Phoenix, Arizona.
The contract, valued at nearly $16 million, calls for Coffman Specialties to pave, with three-inch thick fiber-reinforced concrete, nearly seven miles of the waterway. The complex project also includes the demolition and reconstruction of several structures and gateways which when complete, will provide water to irrigate more than 146,000 acres of farmland.
“We are very pleased to have been awarded this project in the Indian Community and look forward to working closely with our joint venture partner and the local tribal members to provide employment and economic opportunity for the area,” said Colleen Coffman, president of the 20-year old firm. “Canal paving is one of our specialties, having worked on the All American Canal and others.”
The project, known as the Southside Canal Project and part of the Pima-Maricopa Irrigation Project, will consume more than 145,000 square yards of concrete to line the eight-foot deep, 32-feet wide canal which is extremely important to growers in the area. To be completed in three years during scheduled dry-up periods, the concrete lining will prevent valuable water from being lost to ground seepage.
