Axion International Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB: AXIH), producer of the world’s strongest recycled, composite plastic industrial building products, announced today that a paper entitled “World’s First Thermoplastic Railroad Bridges” will be presented on August 31 at this year’s American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) conference in Orlando, FL.
The paper, written by Dr. John Kim of Parsons Brinckerhoff, Dr. Tom Nosker of Rutgers University and Vijay Chandra of Parsons Brinckerhoff, discusses the structural and economic advantages of Axion’s Recycled Structural Plastic Composite (RSPC) recycled plastic building material.
The paper explores and presents specific details about the successful installation of the nearly 100% recycled plastic railroad bridges at the Army Transportation Corps’ Ft. Eustis training facility in Virginia. Two bridges, one 38’ and the other 84’ in length, were completed this spring. The bridges were built to carry the Cooper E60 load and the 260 kips alternate live load.
“We’re privileged to have such an accomplished Project Manager and bridge-building veteran as Dr. John Kim presenting the advantages of Axion’s RSPC to such a distinguished group,” stated Axion CEO, James Kerstein. “We’ve now proven the cost and strength advantages of our product over legacy building materials in two locations where extreme loads were of concern to our clients, and the results have exceeded everyone’s expectations. We’re looking forward to the input of the AREMA attendees and to more RSPC bridge opportunities in many more locations, both domestically and internationally.”
Developed at Rutgers University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Axion’s RSPC is inert and contains no toxic materials. It will never leach, warp and is impervious to insect infestation. In addition, RSPC is completely recyclable at the end of its functional life.
