The Palacio de los Desportes, home to the 1968 Olympic basketball games, will be resurfaced using SnapSports Indoor ReActive flooring. Rodolfo Esquivel, president of the Palacio de los Deportes' board of directors, said changing the floor was necessary because the venue has missed opportunities to host many events because of its outdated floor.
SnapSports offers the top ASTM rated modular surfaces in the industry with exclusive patent technologies for superior performance and safe play. A representative from Gramatech Company, winners of the bid to replace the arena floor, told the media they chose SnapSports surfacing because it is certified by international governing bodies of basketball, football and handball, therefore making the Palacio de los Desportes the most versatile stadium in Mexico.
Other factors that went in to the decision to use SnapSports included the ability to easily remove the surface for non-sports events like concerts, the variety of color choices available and the cushioning effect of the ReActive surface, which eases strain on players' joints.
Jorgen Moller, CEO of SnapSports said, "Palacio de los Desportes is truly a historic site because it hosted the 1968 Olympics. The fact that they chose us makes us proud. We worked hard to develop FIBA certified surfaces and we're excited to see the fruits of our labor."
The Palacio de los Desportes is located six miles from downtown Mexico City. Its trademark domed roof covers nearly seven acres. The stadium seats just over 22,000 people.
