The U.S. Navy has awarded BRDC, a joint venture of Burns and Roe Services Corporation and dck worldwide, a $64.5 million contract for the New Navy Family Housing & Fitness Center Renovation at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The design portion of this design-build project will begin immediately. Construction is anticipated to begin in November 2010 and scheduled for completion in 25 months.
The Family Housing portion of the project involves new construction of 146 family housing units. The BRDC team has included master-planning concepts that promote a sense of community, while striving to create safe, pedestrian-friendly environments that support family activities, neighborhood interaction, and physical activity. The Fitness Renovation will involve enhancements to promote physical health and mental well being for Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families. In addition to the new construction and renovation of the existing Fitness Center, which will conform to Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection standards, the work also includes constructing a youth multi-purpose/soccer field and a little league softball field, resurfacing four tennis courts, and more. Both projects are being designed around “Green Building” guidelines such as the utilization of low flow plumbing fixtures for water conservation, high-efficient equipment to reduce power consumption, solar power to heat hot water, and environmentally friendly building products. The Fitness Renovation is being designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification and the Housing Project to be LEED Silver Compliant.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to construct these facilities, which are so important to the military population serving at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay,” says John Sebastian, Executive Vice President of dck worldwide. “The BRDC team will continue to support the Navy through our enhanced capabilities,” stated Dave Pruett, Senior Vice President of Burns and Roe Services Corporation. “Our long-term record of success and continued business at Guantanamo Bay is a result of our dedicated efforts to provide superior responsive service.”
This contract award represents the most recent event for the joint venture of Burns and Roe and dck, doing business as BRDC, at the Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay. BRDC has been performing work under its Large MACC, Mini MACC, and JOC contracts currently in place with NAVFAC Southeast, including the work recently begun on the $10.8 million design-build Guantanamo Bay Naval Hospital. The hospital project provides for design and construction of repairs to flood-damaged portions of the facility interior and additional construction and renovation in other portions of the facility with expected completion by September 2012.
