Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE Amex: BKR) has been awarded a three-year contract by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for construction support services on the new U.S. Route 33 Nelsonville Bypass in Hocking and Athens Counties, Ohio.
Specifically, Baker was selected by ODOT to provide construction inspection services for Phase III of the Bypass Project. ODOT is investing funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for construction of the final two phases of the three-phase project for this new eight-mile, four-lane highway in and around the Wayne National Forest. The bypass is the state’s single largest transportation stimulus investment project.
Phase III, at a construction value of more than $92 million, consists of 3.87 miles of new U.S. 33, 1.63 miles of a new Route 78 connection to U.S. 33, a half mile of new connection to Route 691, and construction of the east interchange and Hocking River Bridge. The project will relocate Route 78 through the Happy Hollow Area to form the interchange. This phase includes seven million cubic yards of excavation and over four million cubic yards of embankment. Construction began on October 13, 2009, and is scheduled for completion on July 31, 2013. Baker was selected for this project due to their commendable past performance providing construction services on the Pomeroy Mason Bridge (renamed the Bridge of Honor) replacement project for ODOT District 10.
