HOCHTIEF subsidiaries and their participating interests have secured new projects in Australia and the US with a value of over EUR 321.8 million: Leighton Contractors is to build the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere as part of a consortium.
The total volume of the project in the Western Districts of Victoria (Australia) is around EUR 692.5 million (AUD 1 billion). Leighton will receive roughly EUR 200.8 million (AUD 290 million) of this for planning and construction services. In North Bethesda, Maryland (USA), Turner is building a 14-story office building for nearly EUR 52 million (USD 69 million). Furthermore, the Leighton subsidiary Thiess Services recently received an order to provide network construction and maintenance services for the grid in Queensland, Australia, until 2015. The project has a value of up to EUR 69 million (AUD 100 million).
Leighton will undertake the procurement, transportation and errection of the wind turbines for the Macarthur Wind Farm. The company will also build terminal sub-stations, roads, cable trenching and foundations in addition to installing overhead and underground power lines. When completed early 2013, the farm is expected to generate up to 420 megawatts of electricity - enough energy to power around 220,000 homes each year. The office project in North Bethesda is seeking LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council and is scheduled for completion in July 2012. The building will then accommodate 1,300 Federal Government employees on an area of over 60,000 square meters.
